The biggest lie in content creation is that every post needs a new idea. The creators growing fastest aren't having more ideas โ they're extracting more from each idea. One solid long video contains a week of short-form content if you know how to slice it.
The 1-to-7 system
Start with one 10โ20 minute video. Your extraction targets:
- 3 highlight Shorts: the three strongest standalone moments โ opinions, facts, reactions. These are your highest-probability hits.
- 1 teaser Short: the most intriguing 30 seconds, ending with "full video on my channel" as the CTA. This one exists to feed the long video.
- 1 behind-the-scenes clip: a blooper, an outtake, or a candid moment. Humanizes you and performs well on TikTok and Reels.
- 1 quote card: your best single line as a text-first post for Threads or X. Different format, same idea.
- 1 community post: turn the video's core question into a poll or discussion prompt.
That's seven pieces of content from one recording session.
Order matters
Publish the long video first, then release Shorts over the following days โ not all at once. Each Short is a new discovery opportunity that can funnel viewers back to the original. Spacing them out keeps your channel active all week from a single day of filming.
Vary the angle, not just the clip
Three Shorts from the same video shouldn't feel like reruns. Change the hook on each, frame different takeaways, and target different search terms in the titles. Same source material, three different entry points for three different audiences.
Repurposing isn't laziness โ it's leverage. The idea was already good enough to film. Make it work harder.
